One of the first things involved in Sales and Distribution cycle is in creation of inquiry.
P ass Material, quantity, sold-to party, ship-to party. Rests of the fields are optional. Again, the unit of measurement for the material could be checked with F4 after populating it.
We can do this with help of the transaction VA11 or by following the path: Sales and distribution -> Sales -> Inquiry ->Create
An inquiry document can be considered more or less like an internal document.It is not a legal document , but a document to capture information about the details fo the request from prospective customer and to internally circulate within the company. Most of the times, the information captured is about the material and quantity but the rest of the information are not essential. One of the benefits of have an inquiry created is in the reduction of any business overhead needed while replying to the customers.
In many cases, we do not create inquiry, especially when we have all the necessary inputs/information for the subsequent documents,i.e sales documents. But in case, these are not available, it is considered to be a best practice to create an inquiry document.This would help in future to determine the terms and conditions, price and quantities offered to the customer and mostly to help create the quotation document.

In the Create Inquiry screen, give Quotation type, Sales organization, Distribution channel, Division, Sales office and sales group.
